Self-Care & Seasonal Depression

Halloween can be one of the most exciting times of the year for families. Though the tradition of dressing up in cool Halloween costumes and going trick-or-treating is a joyous one, it’s not without potential risks and dangers. Taking trick-or-treat safety precautions can help ensure that everyone has the best Beggars Night possible. It can also help you avoid unwanted foot pain once all that walking is over.
Halloween costumes can be silly or scary, but one thing they should always be is safe. While masks may look cool, they can make it hard for children to see or breathe. Instead of a mask, try non-toxic face paint. Even if you’re going for a spooky look, your kids’ costumes should have a bright and reflective element that makes them easier to see at night. You should also avoid any Halloween costumes with accessories that could cause injuries, like hard plastic weapons or wands.
Even if you plan to be with your kids every step of the way, make sure they know the plan of action for the night. Go over rules and make sure they know to stay on sidewalks, avoid cutting through yards and across driveways, and only cross at designated crosswalks. You should also make sure everyone knows what to do if you get separated. While you’re at it, have everyone stretch for a few minutes so that you’re all ready to put foot to pavement.
Before you walk out the door, it’s important that everyone has everything they’ll need for a successful trick-or-treat. Everyone should have a flashlight, and if possible, a fully charged cell phone just in case. You’ll also want to ensure everyone is wearing the right footwear—heavy boots, open-toe shoes, and shoes without adequate arch support can cause foot pain that’ll cut your night short and sour the sweet mood. And, of course, don’t forget the bag or bucket for everyone’s candy!
