Holiday Self-Care & Stress Relief
November 25, 2024
The new school year is here and it feels like we’re all waking up after the efforts to quarantine. Although different counties may be in different phases, many kids are heading back to the classroom. Beyond practicing patience and remaining flexible (it’s important for your mental health, too!), here are some of our tips to help keep your kids healthy and safe during the school year.
Don’t Send Sick Kids to School
This one holds true no matter what time of year, but especially during a pandemic. If your child is displaying symptoms of illness, keep them at home. Try to get them in the habit of having their temperature taken every morning and if they do have a fever, contact their pediatrician and keep them out of school. If information hasn’t already been shared, reach out to the school to see what their sick policies and rules are for the upcoming year.
Bring Your Own School Supplies
Unless it is absolutely necessary, avoid using any communal school supplies. Ensure that your child has their own well-stocked set of classroom supplies and talk with them about boundaries for sharing with other students.
Hand Washing and Hand Sanitizer
We’ve been hearing for months about how one of the best ways to combat COVID-19 is with frequent and proper handwashing. If you haven’t already, teach your child how to wash their hands properly (click here for some tips) and emphasize how important it is that they wash them frequently. Include alcohol-based hand sanitizer that is 60% or higher in their school supplies in case handwashing isn’t always available.
Face Masks
Face masks are an important element in preventing the spread of coronavirus. These cloth face coverings are recommended by the CDC as a simple barrier to help prevent respiratory droplets from traveling into the air and onto other people when the person wearing the mask/covering talks, sneezes, coughs or raises their voice. Be sure that your child’s mask fits properly and comfortably and that they have a few spares in case of damage or contamination.
