Holiday Self-Care & Stress Relief
November 25, 2024
As more and more of our patients are working from home indefinitely, we are hearing more complaints of neck and back pain. Here are our tips to keep your spine comfortable and healthy while working from home.
Set Up a Workstation
Your couch may be the most comfortable seat in the house, but it’s probably not ideal for eight hours of work each and every day. Setting up an ergonomic and spine-friendly work station is important to stay comfortable and productive. Make sure you have plenty of room to either sit or stand at a table or desk (but a combination of both is ideal). When working, your forearms should rest comfortably and be parallel to the floor. If you are sitting, your thighs should also be parallel to the floor and your chair should offer plenty of back support. If it doesn’t, a small rolled-up towel will do the trick. Remember to keep your screen at eye level to avoid neck strain and check in with your posture throughout the day.
Stretch It Out
Sometimes we get so focused on our work that we forget to move our bodies. To prevent injury and bring fresh oxygen and healing nutrients throughout the body, get up and move around and stretch at least once an hour. We are happy to suggest some stretches to do during your next adjustment.
Give Yourself a Break
When you’re working from an office, you may not realize it but you take several mini-breaks throughout the day. Whether it’s getting up to get water, go to the restroom, or to catch up with a co-worker, your brain and body could use a break. This is much harder to do when working from home, so make a point to give yourself a break every now and then to help manage stress. This is also a great time to get in some stretches! Move your head slowly from side to side, roll your ankles and wrists, and try a few should rolls. You’ll feel better both mentally and physically!
