Self-Care & Seasonal Depression
October 11, 2024
If you enjoy a summer fishing trip, you know that it can become easy to injure yourself while out on the water. An injury can happen rapidly, and it is often not until later that you’ll notice there i
s an issue—and sometimes this means that a lot of damage has been done because of continued trauma. Unlike other sports injuries, fishing issues come from either fighting against the end goal (pulling back on the fishing pole) or being hurt by the gear (running into the side of the boat). Most commonly, the problems come from pulling back on the fishing pole in the wrong way. Our bodies are not very well-equipped to be moving in the way that is needed to pull up a big fish from the depths of oceans and lakes, so sometimes they respond to this behavior with muscle strain in our arms, muscle ruptures, or overuse injuries.
Before boarding, come get adjusted first. Chiropractic care focuses on pain relief, but it also can return your spine and muscles to a neutral and relaxed state. This gives your body the best chance possible at fending off these sorts of injuries while you are on the boat. Furthermore, because your body will be in a prime condition, if an injury did occur, you can stop additional trauma from happening by having all your body parts in the correct state. For example, torn ligaments do not start out as torn, they first go through a stress phase. It is only after additional and excess trauma that they become torn.
Additionally, an adjustment will ensure your body is properly balanced, which is especially important on a slippery dock or rocking boat!
After you have come to your alignment session, you will be given some suggestions on how to stay limber and relaxed while waiting on the fish to bite. To avoid muscle injury, your first course of action should be to continuously stretch throughout the day. You also want to be dressed in the right gear, such as boat shoes to prevent slip and fall accidents. Lastly, remember to come in for an adjustment before you hit the water.
