We are seeing more and more patients who complain of neck pain and related issues caused by hours spent looking down at a mobile device or cell phone. From muscle pain to strains, texting can be a problem for your neck. Here’s what you need to know.
Text Neck
Text neck (also known as tech neck) is often used to describe the best over posture used while looking down at a cell phone. This might seem like no big deal, but when that posture is maintained for hours on end, it can have lasting effects. Did you know that the text neck position can add up to sixty extra pounds of pressure on your spine? When you think about it that way, it’s easy to see how pain and other problems can results from hours of cell phone use.
Take a Tech Break
We know it’s unrealistic to just throw technology to the wayside, but you can take frequent breaks. Instead of texting, tweeting, and scrolling all day long, pic, your phone up and give your family members or friends a call. You can also switch to your computer and type. If you are going to be on your phone for a long period of time, be sure to look up regularly and stretch your neck and back.
Change Positions
It seems that bad habits just happen overnight! We understand it’s easy to develop the habit of holding your phone in a particular way. However, when you are stooped over looking at your phone, it can cause painful muscle strains and sprains. Try to shift your position regularly and hold your phone up at eye level. Remember that the main goal is to avoid straining your muscles due to a bent neck.
