Have you ever hit a wall in the middle of your workday because you feel sore, stiff, or achy? Lacking the energy and focus you need to finish strong? You may want to make time for stretching at work. While it’s recommended that you get up and move around every so often, it’s entirely possible to stretch at your desk in a way that allows you to avoid back and neck pain throughout your day.
The benefits of stretching at work speak for themselves—it can help prevent back and neck pain, keep your body prepared for your post-work workout, and be quite helpful when it comes to boosting your productivity. When you sit for long periods of time, you don’t engage many of your muscles outside of the repetitive motions of typing, clicking, and so forth. Working your muscles increases blood flow in the body, which can give you a natural energy boost without the need for sugary drinks or snacks.
Sitting for long periods of time increases your risk of suffering back and neck pain, especially if you don’t use proper posture or have an ergonomic workspace. Stretching at work, whether you go to a different location or do it all at your desk, helps keep you pain-free so you can enjoy your free time.
The reality is that you shouldn’t sit at your desk for hours on end without occasionally getting up for a quick walk or to move around for a few minutes. But if you’re pressed for time, in the middle of a big project, or just want to stay as active as you can, you may be surprised by how easy it is to stretch at your desk.
Even if you focus on holding your head correctly, working at a desk all day can lead to soreness in your neck. Slowly rolling your head in circles, raising your shoulders up and down, and gently pulling your head toward either shoulder with your hand are all ways of stretching at work that keep your neck strong.
Keeping your back loose at work allows you to stay focused on whatever tasks you have at hand. If you’re not sure how to stretch at your desk for better back health, let your chair be your guide. Sit forward as you normally would and wrap your arms around your seatback until your hands meet. This will stretch your back as well as your arms and shoulders. You can also use your chair to assist you with a spine twist, which works the muscles in your lower back.
