Thanksgiving is a day for reflection and appreciation for all the things we have in our lives. Despite all the challenges of this year, there is much to be thankful for. It’s also a time centered on family, football, and food. Many of us find ourselves eating an extra helping of sweet potato casserole or another slice of pumpkin pie only to end up snoozing on the couch. Don’t Skip Breakfast to Save Room: You’ve surely heard it plenty of times and studies show it still holds true – breakfast is the most important meal of the day. When you’ve got a big meal ahead of you, it might seem silly to worry about breakfast. Making a well-rounded breakfast will actually help you stay on track for healthier choices throughout the day as your body won’t be in starvation mode. We suggest starting with a veggie omelet or fruit with Greek yogurt to get your day started off strong.
Avoid the Table-to-Couch Shift: Rather than roll yourself from the table to the couch, help your body feel better by going for a walk after you eat. Bring your family or friends along with you and start a new tradition. Even if it is just a short distance, it can help boost how you feel both physically and emotionally.
Healthy Swaps: Many of our favorite Thanksgiving dishes aren’t necessarily the healthiest but there are a few substitutions you can make for a healthier plate. When making stuffing, swap white bread for whole grain. Instead of using cream of mushroom soup with your green bean casserole, use flour, mushrooms, and low-fat milk. You can also give mashed cauliflower a try instead of mashed potatoes.
