Ways to Boost Your Immune System
October 22, 2024
Are you striving to make 2024 the year you take full control of your health and well-being? Things like exercise, eating well, and getting a full night’s sleep are all important, but you can still do more. You may also want to make an effort to drink more water—proper water intake helps you stay hydrated, energized, and active.
It’s a common misconception that everyone only needs to drink about eight glasses of water a day. But the reality is that you likely need to drink more water than that depending on your age and activity level. According to the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the average adult woman needs at least 11.5 cups of fluids a day to stay hydrated. For men, that total is around 15.5 cups. This includes fluid that comes from food as well as drinks like coffee and tea.
If you’re exercising more these days, you’ll need even more water to stay hydrated. Drinking enough water before, during, and after your workout supports recovery and ensures that you have the energy you need to get the job done. And you’ll want to consider further increasing your daily water intake during the spring and summer when the weather gets warmer and you start sweating more.
No matter your habits, drinking enough water is critical for your holistic health. If you’re dehydrated, you’ll suffer from harmful side effects like dizziness, headaches, and fatigue. A lack of water makes it more difficult for your body to perform its essential functions, weakening your immunity and the digestive process.
The simplest and most effective way to be sure that you’re drinking enough water and staying hydrated is to keep track of what you drink. This is a bit easier if you have a refillable water bottle with measurements on the outside. If you know you’ve had three 32-ounce bottles of water, you can be confident that you’re at or close to the right daily water intake.
If you just can’t get excited about water, there are ways to make it more appealing. Adding a splash of citrus or mint to your water adds flavor without adding processed sugar, and it can also help you suppress hunger. Drinking carbonated water or seltzer may also be a good move if you drink soda and want to try and cut back, but you’ll want to check to be sure that there’s no added sugar.
